What is a Digital Arrest Scam ?
We often read on media about many people losing money in so called Digital Arrest. What is it all about and is Digital Arrest real. Digital Arrest is a scam used to siphon off money from the victims who are made to believe that they are placed under digital arrest i.e. through video calls. Scammers impersonate police officers or government authorities from CBI, ED, Income Tax etc., on voice calls and video calls, threatening the responders with Digital Arrest claiming that their name is linked to some criminal / illegal activities.
During the scam call, you may get linked to false allegations like illegal drug parcels found in transit at the customs, fraudulent financial transactions, money laundering activities, tax violations etc.,
How to be aware of a Digital Arrest scam and safeguard yourself:
There will be sudden threats and the caller will produce fake warrants and forged documents as evidence
The callers will demand for immediate payment to avoid arrest.
They will stop you from contacting family, friends or outsiders.
If the caller accuses you of any legal offence, stay calm and do not react out of fear or panic.
Do no share your bank account details, card numbers, login id passwords, PIN or OTP.
Law enforcement agencies will never ask for your banking details or ask to transfer funds to any account as part of investigation or for mitigating the alleged circumstances.
Please note there is no such thing as Digital Arrest and there is no provision for the same in Indian law.
